Located in the western edge of the San Fernando Valley, West Hills is a mostly residential area, just outside of the hustle and bustle of the rest of The Valley. Home to multiple parks, West Hills is popular with families and retirees.
West Hills schools are part of The Los Angeles Unified School District. Some of the more highly-sought after elementary schools include Welby Way and Haynes Charter Elementary. The home high school for much of West Hills is El Camino Real Charter High School, which consistently wins the state academic decathlon. In 2018, the school took home its 8th national academic decathlon championship. There are also several private and religiously-affiliated schools in the area.
Parks & Recreation
Known for its sprawling hillsides, West Hills is home to several parks and hiking trails. Hikers appreciate El Escorpion Park, which features trails simple enough for children and more challenging ones for avid hikers. Families enjoy the many other parks in the area, including Lazy J Ranch and Mae Boyar Park. The larger Shadow Ranch Recreation Center features a baseball diamond, basketball courts, a children’s play area, football field and soccer field. Shadow Ranch park also hosts several community events throughout the year.
While mostly residential, you won’t have to travel outside of the bubble of West Hills to fulfill your shopping needs. Small strip malls are sprinkled throughout the area. There are two major shopping centers in West Hills, Platt Village and the Fallbrook Center. Inside Platt Village you’ll find Pavilions, Rite Aid, a nail salon and hair cutting place, as well as a Starbucks and other eateries. The Fallbrook Center is home to about a dozen major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Old Navy, World Market, Michael’s Arts & Crafts. You’ll also find restaurants and an AMC movie theater.
Just down the road, is the indoor shopping mall Westfield Topanga, which features more than 300 stores and restaurants. You’ll find luxury stores including Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Burberry, while still being able to make a quick Target run, within the same mall.
